Why I Call Myself: 'The Musical Artist'.
If you notice, at the bottom of each of the painting pages, I have a song and video I made with it. This took some careful consideration. Music is a big part of my life and I like to include it in my work.
Since 2019, when I paint, I listen to music as I do so. The genres I listen to are Indie Rock, and Folk, Dreampop, and Cinematic Indie. I started listening more to piano and instrumental music when I painted back in December, and a few videos were made with songs I chose that seemed to evoke the right feeling, or head space. It is not perfect, because I am trying to reach a broader audience. People like what they like, and I am taking a chance choosing songs that I like in order to push my paintings, but it can help you get in the mood for a particular piece.
I will be unveiling one artwork at a time for print, once a week. Be sure and sign up for that. One of the paintings I did back in Winter of 2019, is called: Focus on Me. It is a dreamy, soft K-Pop song. In the music video for it by Jus2, they showed a purple backdrop with shapes on the wall behind them. I wanted to paint using these shapes, but instead just followed my instincts, and painted something else. That is often the case with me. I start with an idea, and it takes on a life of it’s own.
I have done a few strictly musical paintings: Becoming What You Made Me from Lissom’s Scalped, Only Love, by Jordan Smith and Everywhere by Susie Suh. These are paintings with the name of the song or the lyrics. Check my unveiling page to sign up to see these pieces and they can be printed.
I call myself the musical Artist because music helps me get in the zone when I paint. Sometimes I paint without it and have many times, but it helps me so much to relax and let go.
Sometimes, I will get really into a song while painting, and the canvas becomes it somehow. This was the case with: Shadows of my Past. I was listening to Again by Julia Wheaton and Empty by Ghostly Kisses. The first song I mentioned though, I played more than once, and really fell into it deeply and it helped guide the process.
Music is a powerful tool.
